It's both crude and sophisticated, funny and sad, savage and sweet. And that is what is so unusual about Archer-it finds gross-out humor in real human weakness. His memories of being held face down in a toilet moderates the insane arrogance that has built up over the previous seven seasons.įor some reason, Sterling's memory of humiliation also manages to be hilarious. In an early episode, Sterling's meets up with his old prep school bullies, and the deep angry sense of shame and resentment and diffidence is touching. Season Seven continues this pattern, heading more deeply into vulnerable territory for its characters. Archer and Lana Kane (voiced by Aisha Tyler) are even parents, which might seem like a throwback to the sitcoms of the 1980s if there weren't plenty of "ball-sloppy sex" to go along with it. They have grown to be better people rather than worse. The last two seasons of the show have tried a rather unprecedented experiment-they have seen the characters become more sympathetic rather than less. The episode is called 'Eve of Destruction' and I am disturbed that I remember all that. George Segal was the main cast, and Walters character was his ex-wife Eve. Its characters are self-absorbed narcissists of the most extreme variety, but they still care about each other. He and Jessica Walter were in a very funny episode of Just Shoot Me, an under-rated sitcom IMO. Sterling: Still though.Īr cher has a self-consciousness about its own nastiness that is refreshing in an era when almost all comedy is about how shitty people can be to themselves and to others there's an odd kind of innocence to Archer despite the constant references to abortion, cancer, slavery, choke-sex, and murder. The show doesn't even bother justifying the switch anymore we've all become so accustomed it no longer needs justification. This time, the entire crew has moved to Los Angeles and founded a detective agency. Having long ago exhausted the genre of spy comedy, Archer has spent the past two seasons switching genres at will. Season Seven launches tonight on FX, and it is more of the same Archer material that we have come to know and love. I think of it as cud television: television you chew over and over and over again and which still gives nourishment. Tarantino famously divided films into movies driven by plot and hang-out movies, shows you watch to find out what happens and shows you watch to spend time with the characters on screen- Archer is an extreme version of the latter type. I don't think I could count how many times I've watched individual episodes, but the difference between watching one episode and another is negligible. Basically, there has to be something better that I haven't seen yet on Netflix for me not to be watching Archer. Archer occupies a strange place in my habits of cultural consumption.
